Keep Horry County Beautiful to Conduct Annual Litter Index

Conway, South Carolina – The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee will conduct the Annual Litter Index February 23, 2016.  Community volunteers are needed to assist with the project.

Keep Horry County Beautiful (KHCB) is a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and PalmettoPride.  One of the requirements of all Keep America Beautiful affiliates is to conduct a Community Appearance Index (aka Litter Index). 

Litter Indexes have been conducted annually since 2011, when KHCB was certified as an affiliate.  KHCB members, staff, and volunteers conduct a windshield survey of 113 locations.  The locations include sections of roadway, boat landings, and parks.  Participants use the following grading system developed by Keep America Beautiful:

  • A location with minimal or no litter scores a 1.
  • A location with slight litter scores a 2.
  • A location that is littered scores a 3.
  • A location with extreme litter scores a 4. 

As part of the Litter Index, KHCB also surveys illegal signs.  A similar scoring system is used:

  • A location with no illegal signs scores a 1.
  • A location with slight sign cluttering scores a 2.
  • A location with sign cluttering scores a 3.
  • A location with extreme sign cluttering scores a 4.

A score is given to each location based on the amount of litter the participants see.  At the end of the day, all the scores are totaled and divided by eight, which is the number of litter districts in Horry County, to get the Litter Index score for KAB.

Horry County Legislative Delegation Seeking Applicants for Boards & Commissions

Conway, South Carolina – The Horry County Legislative Delegation is currently seeking applicants for the following boards/commissions that have vacancies, expired terms, or terms that expire in the near future:

  • Horry County Disabilities & Special Needs Board
  • Horry County Higher Education Commission
  • Horry County Board of Social Services
  • Horry County Transportation Committee
  • Saltwater Recreational Fisheries Advisory Board
  • South Carolina Foster Care Review Board
  • Board of Voter Registration & Elections of Horry County
  • Waccamaw Center for Mental Health Governing Board
  • Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments
  • Waccamaw Regional Transportation Authority

Individuals interested in serving should call the Horry County Legislative Delegation office at (843) 915-5130 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. or email to request an application.  The deadline for receiving applications is Friday, February 12, 2016.



Green Sea Library Temporarily Closes

Conway, South Carolina – The Green Sea branch of the Horry County Memorial Library System will be closed Monday, January 25, 2016, for HVAC repairs.

During the closure, patrons are encouraged to stop by one of the nine other branches located in Aynor, Bucksport, Carolina Forest, Conway, Little River, Loris, North Myrtle Beach, Socastee or Surfside Beach.  Patrons can visit the Horry County Memorial Library’s website for branch locations, directions, hours and more.

RFP Selection to be Made for Communication System

Conway, South Carolina – Recommendations will be made to County Administrator Chris Eldridge by the Evaluation Committee regarding Request for Proposals (RFP) #2015-16-018 Project 25 Radio Communication System. The recommendation will be made on Tuesday, January 26, at 9:00 a.m. in the Administrator’s Conference Room at the Horry County Government and Justice Center, 1301 Second Avenue in Conway.
