Project Description
- Type of Project – This is a highway project that involves the widening of the existing shoulders for 24 linear miles of SC Highway 22 (a limited-access expressway) from its future junction with I-73 to US Route 17. This improvement would bring SC 22 up to "Interstate System standards" and would enable the roadway to be designated as I-73.
- Project Location – Horry County South Carolina. 1st Congressional District (Representative Henry Brown).
- Rural/Urban Designation – The extents of this project are within a rural area. The project is at the outer boundary of the Myrtle Beach urbanized area as defined by the 2000 US Census.
- Total Project Cost - $30,000,000
- TIGER grant funding requested - $30,000,000 (100% of project cost)
Project Purpose and Need:
On February 8, 2008, South Carolina Secretary of Transportation H.B. "Buck" Limehouse and U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary Thomas Barrett signed the Record of Decision (ROD) for the I-3 South. The ROD represents the final approval of the Final Environmental Impact Statement ( (FEIS) and completes the environmental review process for the I-73 South Project. The ROD, approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), locks in the Selected Alternative, which will terminate at an interchange with the existing SC 22 freeway.
In order for SC 22 to receive designation as I-73, the expressway will need to be upgraded to interstate standards. This involves shoulder widening along the 24-mile section of SC 22 between its junction with future I-73 and its terminus at US Hwy 17.
