Horry County, Located on the northern coast of South Carolina, was named after Revolutionary war hero Brigadier General Peter Horry in 1801.
The Horry County Police Department was established in 1959 and is charged with the law enforcement duties in the unincorporated areas of the county.
The department commissioned the shoulder patch enclosed in 1997. A sketch was submitted to the Art Department of Coastal Carolina University who created the finished product as a class project.
The patch inset is the Horry County geographical outline and includes a tobacco barn, the intercostal waterway, the beach, the ocean, and a palmetto tree. All the icons are representative of the nature of Horry County.
The slogan "Independent Republic" is indicative of the independent nature of the county, which is isolated in the early part of its history due to natural water barriers.
The patch was introduced in 1998
