Horry County has a colorful past filled with interesting people and places. This page is a gateway for you to explore the distinctive history of Horry County and its people. We hope you enjoy delving into our proud heritage through the following links. Other excellent sources of information are the County Library and Museum.

All of the branchs of the Horry County Memorial Library have an extensive collection of books on county history and genealogy. Check both the normal and reference sections for the 975 sequence of call numbers, specifically SC 975.787. A few highlights are:

  • Catherine Lewis's Horry County, South Carolina: 1730-1993
  • Rod Gragg's The Illustrated history of Horry County
  • Rod Gragg's Pirates, Planters, and Patriots: historical tales from the SC Grand Strand
  • Randall A. Wells Along the Waccamaw: a yankee discovers a home by the river
  • Blanche W. Floyd's Tales along the Grand Strand of South Carolina
  • One of the major finds, located exclusively at the Conway branch, is the hardbound collection of the Horry County Historical Society's publication the Independent Republic Quarterly.
Chapin Library's reference department would be another good contact. After Catherine Lewis retired from the Horry County library she devoted a lot of time helping augment Chapin's geneological & historical sources.
