SCrabtree Swamp Restoration Project
The Crabtree Swamp Restoration Initiative evolved as an effort to restore the Crabtree Swamp in and around Conway. This project is a collaboration between local governments and conservation districts, state and federal agencies, landowners, nonprofits, and universities. The demonstration project involves willing landowners who have agreed to have their property along Crabtree Canal reshaped between Highway 501 and Oak Street in Conway. The new terraced banks will be designed to increase flood storage and to stabilize the banks using native vegetation. This will reduce erosion and provide habitat for wildlife. The construction work will start once design and permitting are finalized . All parties anticipate that the work will be completed in about six months. The groundbreaking ceremony for the demonstration project was Monday, September 22nd. It was held at Crabtree Canal at Oak Street in Conway. Speakers included officials from the City of Conway, Horry County, Crabtree Swamp Watershed Conservation District and Horry Soil and Water Conservation District. The event ended with local officials performing a ceremonial groundbreaking for the demonstration project.
