The Horry County Sheriff's Office is responsible for numerous tasks including judicial security, processing warrants, fingerprinting services, registration of sex offenders, funeral escorts, providing background checks and operating the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Security Division

Security Squads

The Security Division of the J. Reuben Long Detention Center is made up of four squads.

Officers assigned to the four squads typically work 12-hour shifts. Dayshift normally begins at 5:45 a.m. and ends at 6:00 p.m. The nightshift normally starts at 5:45 p.m. and ends at 6:00 a.m.

Each squad manages housing unit operations, oversees inmate movement and maintains security of the detention center.

Classification

The Classification Division is responsible for the maintenance of all inmate files throughout incarceration at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

All time credits are calculated and filed along with court documents, disciplinary forms and any other data accumulated during incarceration.

The Classification Division assesses each inmate in the Detention Center to determine custody levels. Assessments continue for each inmate as incidents occur that may change the custody level.

Housing Unit Managers

Housing Unit Managers and Population Control Specialists are also assigned to the Classification Division.

Housing Unit Managers are responsible for the wellbeing of inmates and the security of multiple housing units.


Responsibilities include: coordination of inmate classification, unit programming, inmate disciplinary issues, physical facility, equipment and operations.

The men and women who serve as housing unit managers oversee a caseload of inmates that include assisting each inmate in coping with day-to-day needs and concerns relative to living in a correctional environment. Housing unit managers also act as a liaison between the court system and the Detention Center and manage tasks involving court paperwork issues, attorney visits and General Sessions court.

Transportation

The Horry County Sheriff’s Office Transportation Division is responsible for the safety, security and control of passengers during all phases of transport. The transportation officers also deliver paperwork to other local agencies and officials within Horry County along with additional duties as assigned.
