Meeting Advisory: House Opioid Study Committee to Hold Public Hearing in Conway
Will receive testimony from invited speakers and welcomes public participation
  
WHO: The House Opioid Abuse Prevention Study Committee is tasked with developing recommendations identifying preventive measures and increasing treatment and recovery options to better protect South Carolinians from opioid abuse.
 
WHAT: The House Opioid Abuse Prevention Study Committee will hold a public hearing in Conway, SC, to hear public testimony regarding personal experiences and the impact of the opioid epidemic. After the invited guests have concluded, members of the public will also be given the opportunity to address the Study Committee (see additional information).* 
 
WHEN: Wednesday, September 13, 2017 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
 
WHERE: Horry County Government & Justice Center, Council Chambers, 1301 Second Avenue, Conway, SC 29526
Upon entrance through the atrium, participants should go left into the Administration Wing of the building and Council Chambers is located on the second floor at the top of the stairs.
 
*ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Members of the public who wish to provide testimony are welcome to attend and sign in upon arrival. If the two hour time limit expires before an individual has the opportunity to give his/her remarks, written testimony can be submitted for review via email. The House Opioid Abuse Prevention Study Committee has provided a framework for testimony that can be found here.
 



Mosquito Spraying Schedule

Conway, South Carolina-Horry County will conduct mosquito spraying, weather permitting, in the following areas: 

  • August 24 – Emery & Freemont Road areas  

Aerial spraying will be conducted in the evenings usually between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and dusk, weather permitting.  
 
The chemicals used for mosquito control spraying are approved by the EPA and pose minimal risk to humans or animals.  Individuals with asthma or other respiratory illness may wish to stay indoors and close windows and doors during spraying.  In addition, homegrown fruits and vegetables should be washed, scrubbed, and/or peeled before eating.
 
To help keep our honeybee population safe, beekeepers are urged to contact Horry County Stormwater to identify the location of their colonies.  In addition, citizens who need to request spraying in their area can contact the Horry County Road & Drainage Hotline at 843-381-8000.

Horry County Animal Care Center to Hold Pet Vaccination Clinic-CANCELLED DUE TO POSSIBLE HURRICANE IRMA

Conway, South Carolina – The Horry County Animal Care Center (HCACC) will hold a vaccination clinic, 12 September 2017, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the shelter located at 1923 Industrial Park Road in Conway. The following services will be offered:

  • Distemper/Parvo                  $10--must be at least 8-weeks old (canine)
  • Bordatella                             $10--must be at least 8-weeks old (canine)
  • Rabies                                  $10--must be at least 4-months old (canine & feline)
  • Microchip                              $15--must be at least 8-weeks old (canine & feline)
  • Rhinotracheitis/Calici            $10--must be at least 8-weeks old (feline)

Dogs and cats are both welcome; dogs must be on a hand-held leash and cats must be in a pet carrier.

The Animal Care Center also holds low cost spay/neuter clinics, which are open to all residents of Horry County. The cost for cats is $50 and dogs are $80 (discounted fees are available for residents receiving government assistance). Contact the HCACC for more information or to make an appointment.

To help homeless animals find loving homes, the HCACC offers discounted adoptions the first Friday and Saturday of each month. The discounted fee typically includes spaying/neutering, vaccines, heartworm or leukemia testing, heartworm and flea preventative, intestinal parasite treatment and microchipping. Qualifying new pet parents also get 30-days free pet health insurance and coupons from local pet businesses.

Horry County Parks & Open Space Plan Public Meetings

Conway, South Carolina – Horry County Planning & Zoning, Parks & Recreation, and the Parks & Open Space Board will be hosting public meetings to present a draft of the Horry County Parks and Open Space Plan. The plan provides recommendations for recreation facilities and open space preservation in the unincorporated areas of Horry County.  Many people and organizations have been involved in the development of this plan, and the County is seeking additional public input prior to finalizing the plan. Public meetings will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on:

  • Monday, August 28, 2017 – South Strand Recreation Center, 9650 Scipio Lane, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588
  • Tuesday, August 29, 2017 – North Strand Recreation Center, 120 Hwy 57 South, Little River, SC 29566
  • Wednesday, August 30, 2017 – Carolina Forest Recreation Center, 2254 Carolina Forest Blvd, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579
  • Thursday, August 31, 2017, Horry County Government & Justice Center, 1301 2nd Ave, Conway, SC 29526

A draft of the plan can be found on the Horry County Parks and Open Space Board webpage. Printed copies of the plan are also available at the Horry County Planning & Zoning Office, CB Berry Community Center, North Strand Recreation Center, Carolina Forest Recreation Center, South Strand Recreation Center, and James Frazier Community Center. Citizens are also invited to send comments directly to Leigh Kane.  

After comments are received, the Horry County Parks & Open Space Board will incorporate them into a revision and make a recommendation to the Horry County Planning Commission and the Horry County Council to consider adoption of the plan.
