Conway, South Carolina - The Horry County IT/GIS Department will begin a project using drones to fly the beach. The project will provide baseline data and contours for the entire length of the beach. The data will be the basis for future erosion/renourishment projects undertaken along the coast.
The goal of this project will be to fly the beach (dunes to low tide) to provide a baseline for future comparisons. The imagery will be used to create hill shades and extract contours using ArcGIS. After future storm events, the beach areas will be re-flown and comparison models will be done to calculate beach erosion. The data collected will also be used for documentation purposes.
The current condition of the beach reflects significant erosion as a result of the 2015 storm and 2016 Hurricane Matthew. The baseline data will be collected and processed. When the beach is renourished, the beach will also be re-flown and baseline data will be maintained in the event of future storms.
The County’s flight planning schedules will be posted to the County’s website.
Horry County anticipates flying the entire beach beginning in the November 2016 timeframe for this project.
