KHCB Committee Looking for Citizens to Join

Conway, South Carolina – The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee is seeking dedicated citizens of Horry County to apply to serve as a member of its Board of Directors. It is also hoping to grow its general membership to increase its capacity to support its mission: To inspire residents and visitors to value and protect the natural beauty of Horry County and to empower them to keep the open spaces, rivers, and beaches clean and litter free.

The committee strives to achieve this goal by assisting community groups with litter cleanup events and providing recommendations for beautification projects throughout the County. Keep Horry County Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and PalmettoPride. The committee was established through a resolution of Horry County Council to become an official committee of its Parks & Open Space Board. Board meetings are typically held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. at the Horry County Government & Justice Center in Conway. The public is welcome to attend.

This month, in lieu of the Board of Directors meeting, members of the committee will join county staff in assessing the litter problem on county roads, parks, boat landings, and other public spaces. This annual assessment will be used to help the committee prioritize future litter cleanup and beautification efforts. The committee welcomes community groups to adopt stretches of county roads and public spaces to help keep them clean. This past weekend, over 600 pounds of trash were collected in the Racepath Community alone. On Saturday, June 8, at 9 a.m., you can join the Distinguished Men of Bucksport at the James R. Frazier Community Center to help cleanup Bucksport Road. To find out how you can get involved in Keep Horry County Beautiful, visit their Facebook page or call the Horry County Planning & Zoning Department at 843- 915-5340.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley will present members of the Horry County Architectural Review Board with the award in Columbia, South Carolina, on June 11, 2013.
