Board of Architectual Review's Video Contest Wins Preservation Service Award

Horry County, South Carolina – The Horry County Architectural Review Board’s High School Video Contest has been awarded the prestigious Preservation Service Award for 2013. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley will present members of the Horry County Architectural Review Board with the award in Columbia, South Carolina, on June 11, 2013.

The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation, the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor recognize exceptional accomplishments in the preservation, rehabilitation and interpretation of South Carolina’s architectural and cultural heritage with the statewide Historic Preservation Awards.

In September 2012, the Horry County Board of Architectural Review sponsored their first ever High School Video Contest. The objective of the contest was for area high school students to create a local history related video, which told the story of a building or site within Horry County that was at least 50-years old. By the contest deadline in late November 2012, the Architectural Review Board received nine videos and had selected three winners.

County To Treat Catch Basins To Reduce Mosquito Numbers

Horry County, South Carolina – Weather permitting, Horry County will begin treating nearly 6,000 local catch basins over the coming weeks to reduce the mosquito population. Due to the warm winter and rainfall amounts, mosquito numbers are higher than in previous years.

County residents can help reduce mosquitoes by inspecting their property for potential breeding sites and using these preventative measures:
  • Clear drainage ditches of debris and weeds.
  • Keep boats drained, covered or overturned.
  • Empty, overturn or remove water-holding containers.
  • Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths and containers used to root plants at least once a week.
  • Clean leaves and pine straw from clogged roof gutters.
  • Stock ornamental ponds with top-feeding minnows.
  • Maintain swimming pools properly.
  • Repair any holes in window and door screens.
  • Place mosquito larvicide donuts or tablets in ditches or other areas of shallow standing water. These may be purchased at most home centers.
