Relocation to Begin for New Horry County Museum

Conway, South Carolina — The Horry County Museum, currently located at 428 Main Street in Conway, will close permanently on Friday, August 30, at 5 p.m. to begin relocating the artifacts into the new Museum location at the Historic Burroughs School located down the street at 805 Main Street. The relocation of artifacts and installation of exhibits will take several weeks and a grand opening date will be announced at a later date.

The public is welcome to tour the current Museum prior to its official closing. The current Museum will be open on Saturday, August 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, August 27 through August 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Horry County Museum is located in the former Conway Post Office building, which was built in 1935-36, and has been its home for the past 32 years. The building is architecturally significant as an excellent example of a New Deal-era post office produced by the Public Works Division of the United States Department of the Treasury. It is also significant as a design directed by Louis A. Simon, Supervising Architect of the Department of the Treasury, who oversaw a staff of architects designing post offices, courthouses, office buildings, and other federal government buildings under the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Depression and World War II. An architectural masterpiece, the Conway Post Office stands as a testimony to the prosperity of Conway during the late 1800s and the early 1900s. Featuring an off-center entrance with large fanlight above, and eight-over-eight sash windows with fanlights above and wooden panels below, a concrete cornice line and a side elevation which has a twelve-over-twelve windows, the one-story brick post office represents the quintessential Classical Revival design. The Conway Post Office was the first Federal post office built in the city of Conway and is one of the few existing public buildings that boast the Classical Revival design. This post office served the city of Conway until it was replaced by a new federal post office in 1977. In 1981, the renovated building was reopened as the Horry County Museum where it will officially close on Friday, August 30, to relocate to another historical building in Conway known to many as the Burroughs School. The Conway Post Office was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on September 2, 2009. The Conway Post Office is owned by Horry County and the final decision on the future of the building has not yet been decided.

The Historic Burroughs School, also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will become the new home for the Horry County Museum in the near future. Over the past few years, construction has been taking place in the school to renovate the building to accommodate its new life as a museum. Currently, museum staff is building and installing exhibits in the building so that the public can experience a broader introduction to Horry County History. The renovated facility will allow the museum to provide bigger exhibits, more nationally recognized traveling exhibits, and public programming in the auditorium.

Paul Living History Farm will not be impacted by this closing and will continue to be open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The Farm is located at 2279 Harris Shortcut Rd, at the corner of Harris Short Cut Rd. and Hwy 701 N. in Conway.
