Opportunities to Support Keep Horry County Beautiful

Conway, South Carolina – There are many opportunities in April to support and get involved with Keep Horry County Beautiful (KHCB). April is Zero Tolerance for Litter Month and April 22, 2014, is Earth Day.

On April 12, KHCB will be participating in StormFest from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the TicketReturn.com Stadium. StormFest is a free, family-friendly severe weather awareness and preparedness event focusing on kids through interactive/hands-on activities while also providing adults with brochures and guides. This event offers attendees the ability to meet face to face with the National Weather Service, public safety agencies, military and non-profit organizations, local TV meteorologists, and local businesses regarding local natural hazards and vulnerabilities.

On April 19, KHCB will assist the Waccamaw Riverkeeper with RIVERSWEEP beginning at 9:00 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the Conway Marina and maneuvering kayaks on the Waccamaw River as they pick up litter and debris. Join KHCB starting at the Conway Marina or at one of the adopt-a-landing sites if you so choose to help clean up our river. There will be a roll-off container at the marina for trash or each group can drop off debris at the closest Convenience Center. Earth Day Music Fest will begin at Riverfront Park at 11a.m. Stop by and visit Riverkeeper and KHCB there as well.

KHCB will participate in HTC Green Fair again this year. The event is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the HTC building on Hwy 501 across from Horry-Georgetown Technical College at 2201 Highway 501 North in Conway. Come by and learn more about KHCB and other groups that are working hard to protect our environment. Bring your old telephone books to recycle.

Ocean Bay Middle School will host its annual Earth Day at the Bay Event on April 26 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. This event is geared towards youth and helping them learn more about how to protect the environment. Keep Horry County Beautiful will have a table set up and some great give-away items. Come out for a fun day!

The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except October and December. The next meeting is April 22, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. in Multi-purpose Room B of the Government and Justice Center located 1301 2nd Avenue in Conway. Horry County Animal Care Center to Hold Pet Vaccination Clinic

Conway, South Carolina– The Horry County Animal Care Center will hold a vaccination clinic, 24 April 2014, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the animal shelter located at 1923 Industrial Park Road in Conway. The Clinic will offer the following services:

  • Distemper/Parvo: $10--must be at least 8-weeks old (canine)
  • Bordatella: $10--must be at least 8-weeks old (canine)
  • Rabies: $10--must be at least 4-months old (canine & feline)
  • Microchip: $15--must be at least 8-weeks old (canine & feline)
  • Rhinotracheitis/Calici: $10--must be at least 8-weeks old (feline)
Dogs and cats are both welcome; dogs must be on a hand-held leash and cats must be in a pet carrier.

The Animal Care Center holds these clinics monthly.

To help homeless animals in Horry County find loving homes, the Animal Care Center will offer discounted adoptions the first Friday and Saturday of each month. Potential adopters are encouraged to visit and spend time with the animal they are interested in. Most of the animals are already spayed or neutered and have their shots up to date, however younger animals may need to be returned later to have shots and/or spay/neutering done. The paperwork is easy and only takes a few minutes to fill out. Adoption fees are discounted and typically include spaying/neutering, vaccines, heartworm or leukemia testing, heartworm and flea preventative, intestinal parasite treatment and micro-chipping. Qualifying new pet parents also get 30-days free pet health insurance and coupons from local pet businesses.

North Myrtle Beach Library to Close for Inventory

Conway, South Carolina – The North Myrtle Beach branch of the Horry County Memorial Library System will close Tuesday, March 25, 2014, and Wednesday, March 26, 2014, for inventory. Patrons are encouraged to visit one of the other nine branches of the Horry County Memorial Library System. The North Myrtle Beach Library will reopen Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 9:30 a.m.

Stormfest 2014

Conway, South CarolinaHorry County Emergency Management, the City of Myrtle Beach and the National Weather Service will host StormFest 2014 on Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ticketreturn.com Field, home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. This event is free and open to the public.

This family-fun event will feature storm and safety related displays/booths to include Horry County and Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue, the American Red Cross, the Children’s Museum of South Carolina, Horry County Solid Waste Authority, Horry Electric, and the Coastal Waccamaw Stormwater Education Consortium and more.

Displays will be located throughout Ticketreturn.com field and will feature apparatus from Horry County and Myrtle Beach Fire Departments, the Horry County Animal Care Center adoption trailer, Myrtle Beach Police Beach Patrol vehicles, the Horry County Bomb Squad and much more!

Kid activities will be scattered throughout the park and will include thumbprint bookmarks, beanbag toss, meet the lineman (children can get in the Horry Electric truck bucket with a hard hat and parents can take their pictures), Myrtle Beach Fire safety room, playground, bounce houses, and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans’ mascot, Splash, will even make an appearance!


Jersey Mike's Subs Partners with SOS Health Care and Horry County Project Lifesaver

Conway, South Carolina – Horry County and SOS Health Care are joining forces with Jersey Mike’s Subs throughout Horry County during the month of March for the “Month of Giving” fundraising campaign. Funds will be utilized to purchase Horry County Project Lifesaver Wristbands for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder & Alzheimer's. The campaign will culminate in a community event, “Spirit Knight”, on Wednesday, March 12, at Jersey Mike’s in Myrtle Beach (2602 North Kings Highway). Stop by and show your support!


During the month of March, customers can make a donation to SOS Health Care’s Project Lifesaver Program at all seven Jersey Mike’s Subs in Horry County.

“Jersey Mike’s Subs is doing their part to provide for the safety of our loved ones with Autism and Alzheimer’s”, said Monique Clement of the SOS Health Care. “This fundraising effort will provide the equipment necessary to supply more people with Project Lifesaver Tracking Wristbands assuring their recovery if they go lost or missing. Thank you Jersey Mike’s for giving us the opportunity to protect our loved ones. Please do your part and visit a Jersey Mike’s store. You can make the difference!”

On March 26, “Day of Giving” will take place at Jersey Mike’s restaurants nationwide to benefit 86 different charities. All seven Jersey Mike’s Subs locations in Horry County will donate 100 percent of their proceeds to the SOS Heath Care Project Lifesaver Program. Also on March 26, several representatives from SOS Healthcare, Inc., and Horry County Public Safety will be visiting all seven Jersey Mike's stores throughout the entire day to thank Jersey Mike's Subs for supporting such a great cause for our community!


“Giving…making a difference in someone’s life” has been the mission of Jersey Mike’s from the beginning. Just since 2010, Jersey Mike’s locations throughout the country have raised more than $5 million for worthy local charities like SOS Health Care, and distributed more than 500,000 free sub sandwiches to help numerous causes.
