Keep Horry County Beautiful Litter Event

Conway, South Carolina – The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee announces a volunteer opportunity for people or organizations interested in assisting with upcoming litter cleanups in our community.  Trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and trash grabbers will be provided.

Saturday, May 16 – Bucksport Road – 9 a.m.-The Distinguished Men of Bucksport in partnership with Keep Horry County Beautiful will clean up Bucksport Road in Bucksport.  Interested volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. at the James R. Frazier Community Center located at 1370 Bucksport Road.  For more information, contact Alphonzo Sherman at 843-340-5586.

The next meeting of the Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee is May 26, 2015 at 2:30 PM in Multi-purpose Room B of the Government and Justice Center located 1301 2nd Avenue in Conway.  If you want to get involved in keeping our boat landings, waterways, parks, and roadsides beautiful and litter free throughout the year, please contact Keep Horry County Beautiful (email or 915-5340). 



Still Time to Register for the Horry County Community Cleanup Day

Conway, South Carolina – Horry County Council, in conjunction with Keep Horry County Beautiful and numerous partners, will host a countywide, volunteer litter cleanup event Saturday, November 8, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The event will feature 12-locations around the county where volunteers can choose to participate. Sign-in at each location will begin at 8:30 a.m. with roadside pickup to begin at 9 am to 11:30 am.  A list of the 12 locations are as follows:

  • Little River/NMB – Meeting location is the Johnny Causey Landing on Little River Neck Road
  • Carolina Forest – Meeting location is the Carolina Forest Recreation Center
  • Lake Arrowhead/Arcadian Shores – Meeting location is the Highway 17/SC 22 Interchange Boat Landing
  • Myrtle Beach – Meeting location is the Olin Blanton Building at 1201 21st Avenue North
  • Fantasy Harbour – Meeting location is Medieval Times at 2904 Fantasy Way
  • South Strand – Meeting location is the South Strand Recreation Center at 9650 Scipio Lane
  • Socastee – Meeting location is the Socastee Yacht Basin and Park (544 landing) at 4351 Peachtree Road
  • Bucksport – Meeting location is the James R. Frazier Community Center at 1370 Bucksport Road
  • CCU/Conway – Meeting location is the Baxley Hall Parking lot at CCU on University Boulevard
  • Loris – Meeting location is the Loris Nature Park at 300 Loris Lions Road
  • Green Sea/Floyds – Meeting location is the Green Sea/Floyds Library and Senior Center at 5331 Highway 9
  • Aynor – Meeting location is the Aynor United Methodist Church at 1007 Elm Street

Volunteers are invited to a post celebration party at the Myrtle Beach Speedway from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m.  The litter collected at the various locations around the county will be transported and displayed at the Speedway.  There will be lunch, prizes, entertainment provided by the band Cool Hand, public safety displays, animal adoptions, and much more!

Participating agencies and partners for the event include Keep Horry County Beautiful, PalmettoPride, Coastal Carolina University, Horry County Schools, Carolina Forest Civic Association, Greater Burgess Community Association, Chicora Indian Tribe, Horry County Solid Waste Authority, Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors, Myrtle Beach Speedway, Chick-Fil-A, the Jamestown Chefs, Cool Hand, and many more.

Pre-registration is highly encouraged and available on the Horry County website.  Volunteers may follow the link to pre-register online or may download the preregistration form and mail it to Nancy Tindall, Horry County Planning & Zoning, 1301 2nd Ave, Conway, SC 29526.  Walk-ups are also welcome the day of the event and a waiver form will be provided prior to participating in the cleanup event. The public is encouraged to participate as well as church groups, civic organizations, community associations, local businesses, etc. Come out and show your support for a cleaner Horry County!

Volunteers should also download a waiver form to bring to the registration table on the day of the event. One form will be required per individual. NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CLEANUP EVENT WITHOUT A SIGNED WAIVER FORM!   Please note that participants who are at least 16 years of age, but under 18 years of age, must have a parent or other legal custodian sign the waiver form.  NO PARTICIPANTS UNDER THE AGE OF 16 YEARS WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE WITHOUT PRESENCE OF A PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN.

Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes to participate and are encouraged to wear long sleeves, long pants, leather shoes or boots, and eye protection.  Trash bags, gloves, a wristband, and a brightly colored t-shirt and safety vest will be provided the day of the event.

Opportunities to Support Keep Horry County Beautiful

Conway, South Carolina – There are many opportunities in April to support and get involved with Keep Horry County Beautiful (KHCB). April is Zero Tolerance for Litter Month and April 22, 2014, is Earth Day.

On April 12, KHCB will be participating in StormFest from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the TicketReturn.com Stadium. StormFest is a free, family-friendly severe weather awareness and preparedness event focusing on kids through interactive/hands-on activities while also providing adults with brochures and guides. This event offers attendees the ability to meet face to face with the National Weather Service, public safety agencies, military and non-profit organizations, local TV meteorologists, and local businesses regarding local natural hazards and vulnerabilities.

On April 19, KHCB will assist the Waccamaw Riverkeeper with RIVERSWEEP beginning at 9:00 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the Conway Marina and maneuvering kayaks on the Waccamaw River as they pick up litter and debris. Join KHCB starting at the Conway Marina or at one of the adopt-a-landing sites if you so choose to help clean up our river. There will be a roll-off container at the marina for trash or each group can drop off debris at the closest Convenience Center. Earth Day Music Fest will begin at Riverfront Park at 11a.m. Stop by and visit Riverkeeper and KHCB there as well.

KHCB will participate in HTC Green Fair again this year. The event is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the HTC building on Hwy 501 across from Horry-Georgetown Technical College at 2201 Highway 501 North in Conway. Come by and learn more about KHCB and other groups that are working hard to protect our environment. Bring your old telephone books to recycle.

Ocean Bay Middle School will host its annual Earth Day at the Bay Event on April 26 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. This event is geared towards youth and helping them learn more about how to protect the environment. Keep Horry County Beautiful will have a table set up and some great give-away items. Come out for a fun day!

The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except October and December. The next meeting is April 22, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. in Multi-purpose Room B of the Government and Justice Center located 1301 2nd Avenue in Conway. April is Zero Tolerance Month for Litter

Conway, South Carolina-Horry County Council along with PalmettoPride, the South Carolina Litter Control Association and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has proclaimed April as Zero Tolerance for Litter Month. 

Zero Tolerance Month is a joint initiative uniting all law enforcement agencies in an effort to reduce litter and heighten awareness of South Carolina litter laws. In support of Zero Tolerance Month, the Horry County Police will fight litter locally by targeting littering, illegal dumping and uncovered loads. Penalties for littering may include fines up to $1,000 and a mandatory 100 percent assessment to the fine plus court costs. Convictions can lead to imprisonment for 30 days to one year, a criminal record and imposed community service.

Keep Horry County Beautiful Litter Cleanups

Conway, South Carolina – The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee announces several volunteer opportunities for people or organizations interested in assisting with upcoming litter cleanups in our community.

The Greater Burgess Community Association will hold a community cleanup Saturday, March 15, 2014. The event will begin with registration at 9 a.m. at the South Strand Recreation Center located at 9650 Scipio Lane in Myrtle Beach. Volunteers will be transported to clean up litter along community roads such as Holmestown Road, McDowell Shortcut, and Bay Road. Keep Horry County Beautiful will be assisting with safety vests, gloves, and garbage bags.

The Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors will clean up litter along the George Bishop Parkway on Saturday, March 22, 2014. Volunteers will meet at 10 a.m. at the South Carolina Real Estate Network located at 3721 Wesley Street (off George Bishop Parkway) in Myrtle Beach.

Also, on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 10 a.m., the Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee will assist the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge in a cleanup of an illegal dumpsite at the Cox Ferry Recreation Area located off Jackson Bluff Road in Conway.

The Carolina Forest Civic Association will be holding their Spring Cleanup on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Event registration starts at 9 a.m. at the Carolina Forest Recreation Center located at 2254 Carolina Forest Boulevard, Myrtle Beach.

Most events wrap up around noon. Cleanup supplies are provided however volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and close-toe shoes. Volunteers may also wish to bring sunscreen and/or bug spray.
