Surfside Library Temporary Hours of Operation to Change

Conway, South Carolina – The Surfside Beach branch of the Horry Memorial Library (HCML) system will close at 11 a.m. daily starting Friday, October 23, 2015, through Friday, October 30, 2015, due to HVAC system repairs.  Patrons are encouraged to visit one of the other nine branches of the Horry County Memorial Library.  Locations, hours and contact information are available on the HCML website

Bucksport Library to Close for Improvements

Conway, South Carolina – The Bucksport branch of the Horry County Memorial Library will be closed Wednesday, October 28, 2015, and Thursday, October 29, 2015, for installation of a new mobile carriage to the mobile shelving unit.  This installation will mean shelving space for additional titles and make it less crowded for the resources currently at the library.  The Bucksport Library will reopen Saturday, October 31, 2015, at 9 a.m.

During the closure, patrons are encouraged to visit the Horry County Memorial Library’s other nine locations throughout Horry County.

Horry County Reads: Ron Rash

Conway, South Carolina – The Horry County Memorial Library will host a month-long community read program called, Horry County Reads: Ron Rash. This read program is similar to the American Library Association and the National Endowment of the Arts’ Big Read programs that were first started in 2006.

The Horry County Reads: Ron Rash is the county library’s initiative to get people reading again and to expose readers to literary authors they might not normally read. The month-long program kicks-off on October 15 with a round table discussion on the Tales of the Ragged Mountains: A Discussion of Poetry and Fiction by Ron Rash, featuring several Coastal Carolina University faculty members. The kick-off event will be hosted at the Carolina Forest Library at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Throughout the designated month, various events will take place at all 10 Horry County Memorial Library branches and the finale event will be a live presentation by Ron Rash on November 19, 2015, at the Horry County Museum auditorium located at 805 Main Street in Conway (on this day all library branches will close at 5 p.m.). The two-hour presentation will end with a reception and book signing next door at the Conway Library. This event is also free and open to the public.

Ron Rash is a critically acclaimed, award winning novelist, short story writer, and poet who has a strong connections to the Carolinas. He was born in Chester, SC, received his Masters’ Degree from Clemson University, and is currently on the faculty at Western Carolina University.

Ron Rash is the author of the 2009 PEN/Faulkner finalist and New York Times bestselling novel Serena, in addition to four other prizewinning novels, including One Foot in Eden, Saints at the River, The World Made Straight, and The Cove; four collections of poems; and six collections of stories, among them Burning Bright, which won the 2010 Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award; Chemistry and Other Stories, which was a finalist for the 2007 PEN/Faulkner Award; and most recently, Something Rich and Strange. Twice the recipient of the O. Henry Prize, he teaches at Western Carolina University.

Conway, South Carolina – The Conway branch of the Horry County Memorial Library System will remain closed Tuesday, March 3, 2015, for the installation of new carpet.

During the closure, patrons are encouraged to stop by one of the nine other branches located in Aynor, Bucksport, Carolina Forest, Green Sea/Floyds, Little River, Loris, North Myrtle Beach, Socastee or Surfside.  Patrons may also visit the Horry County Memorial Library’s website for branch locations, directions, hours and more.
