Horry County Community Cleanup Day was a Huge Success

Horry County Council, in conjunction with Keep Horry County Beautiful and numerous partners, hosted a countywide, volunteer litter cleanup event on Saturday, November 8, 2014. The event featured 12-locations around the county where approximately 700 volunteers came out and picked up 1,056 bags of litter. The number of bags of litter collected by County Council district are as follows:

  • District 1 - 83 bags
  • District 2 - 161 bags
  • District 3 - 92 bags
  • District 4 - 109 bags
  • District 5 - 23 bags
  • District 6 - 81 bags
  • District 7 - 74 bags
  • District 8 - 166 bags
  • District 9 - 50 bags
  • District 10 - 137 bags
  • District 11 - 80 bags

Participating agencies and partners for the event include Keep Horry County Beautiful, PalmettoPride, Coastal Carolina University, Horry County Schools, Carolina Forest Civic Association, Greater Burgess Community Association, Chicora Indian Tribe, Horry County Solid Waste Authority, Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors, Coast RTA, Myrtle Beach Speedway, Chick-Fil-A, the Jamestown Chefs, Cool Hand, and many more.

Keep Horry County Beautiful also recognized the following groups and individuals for achievement in efforts to reduce litter and beautify our county. The Community Cleanup and Beautification Awards for 2014 were:

Still Time to Register for the Horry County Community Cleanup Day

Conway, South Carolina – Horry County Council, in conjunction with Keep Horry County Beautiful and numerous partners, will host a countywide, volunteer litter cleanup event Saturday, November 8, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The event will feature 12-locations around the county where volunteers can choose to participate. Sign-in at each location will begin at 8:30 a.m. with roadside pickup to begin at 9 am to 11:30 am.  A list of the 12 locations are as follows:

  • Little River/NMB – Meeting location is the Johnny Causey Landing on Little River Neck Road
  • Carolina Forest – Meeting location is the Carolina Forest Recreation Center
  • Lake Arrowhead/Arcadian Shores – Meeting location is the Highway 17/SC 22 Interchange Boat Landing
  • Myrtle Beach – Meeting location is the Olin Blanton Building at 1201 21st Avenue North
  • Fantasy Harbour – Meeting location is Medieval Times at 2904 Fantasy Way
  • South Strand – Meeting location is the South Strand Recreation Center at 9650 Scipio Lane
  • Socastee – Meeting location is the Socastee Yacht Basin and Park (544 landing) at 4351 Peachtree Road
  • Bucksport – Meeting location is the James R. Frazier Community Center at 1370 Bucksport Road
  • CCU/Conway – Meeting location is the Baxley Hall Parking lot at CCU on University Boulevard
  • Loris – Meeting location is the Loris Nature Park at 300 Loris Lions Road
  • Green Sea/Floyds – Meeting location is the Green Sea/Floyds Library and Senior Center at 5331 Highway 9
  • Aynor – Meeting location is the Aynor United Methodist Church at 1007 Elm Street

Volunteers are invited to a post celebration party at the Myrtle Beach Speedway from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m.  The litter collected at the various locations around the county will be transported and displayed at the Speedway.  There will be lunch, prizes, entertainment provided by the band Cool Hand, public safety displays, animal adoptions, and much more!

Pre-registration is highly encouraged and available on the Horry County website.  Volunteers may follow the link to pre-register online or may download the preregistration form and mail it to Nancy Tindall, Horry County Planning & Zoning, 1301 2nd Ave, Conway, SC 29526.  Walk-ups are also welcome the day of the event and a waiver form will be provided prior to participating in the cleanup event. The public is encouraged to participate as well as church groups, civic organizations, community associations, local businesses, etc. Come out and show your support for a cleaner Horry County!

Volunteers should also download a waiver form to bring to the registration table on the day of the event. One form will be required per individual. NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CLEANUP EVENT WITHOUT A SIGNED WAIVER FORM!   Please note that participants who are at least 16 years of age, but under 18 years of age, must have a parent or other legal custodian sign the waiver form.  NO PARTICIPANTS UNDER THE AGE OF 16 YEARS WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE WITHOUT PRESENCE OF A PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN.

Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes to participate and are encouraged to wear long sleeves, long pants, leather shoes or boots, and eye protection.  Trash bags, gloves, a wristband, and a brightly colored t-shirt and safety vest will be provided the day of the event.

Keep Horry County Beautiful Community Clean Ups

Conway, South Carolina – The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee will assist with community clean up events in the following areas, volunteers to assisting with upcoming litter cleanups in our community are always welcome:

Saturday, August 2, 2014, at 9 a.m. – Reaves Ferry Landing - Weather permitting, the Waccamaw Riverkeepers will clean up litter.  Volunteers will meet at the landing located at 5880 Old Reaves Ferry Road in Conway. Cleanup supplies will be provided, however volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, close-toe shoes and bring sunscreen, bug spray, snacks, kayaks, fishing rods, etc.

Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 11 a.m. - Loris Nature Park- Join the Chicora Indian Tribe of South Carolina in partnership with Keep Horry County Beautiful for the cleanup of Loris Nature Park, located on Lions Road in Loris.  Trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and pickup sticks will be provided.  Contact Chief Clyde Strickland for more information by email or 843-597-5504.

Saturday, August 23, 2014, at 11 a.m. - Socastee Park and Yacht Basin-Join the Chicora Indian Tribe of South Carolina in partnership with Keep Horry County Beautiful for the cleanup of Socastee Park and Yacht Basin, located under the 544 Bridge off Peachtree Road.  Trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and pickup sticks will be provided. Saturday, May 3, 2014, 11 a.m.- Loris Nature Park-The Chicora Indian Tribe of South Carolina, in partnership with Keep Horry County Beautiful, will host a cleanup of the Loris Nature Park, located on Lions Road in Loris. Saturday, May 10, 2014, 9 a.m- Port Drive Cleanup-The Harbour Towne Home Owners’ Association, in partnership with Keep Horry County Beautiful, will host a cleanup along Port Drive near the intersection of Highway 17 Bypass and Socastee Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. Saturday, May 17, 2014, 8 a.m.– Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup-Captain Smiley Fishing Charters and area businesses, in partnership with Keep Horry County Beautiful, will host the 3rd Annual Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup. Participants will meet at Johnny Causey Landing in Little River at 8 a.m. All are encouraged to bring their boat or kayak to join the effort. No boat, no problem! Trash bags, gloves, and pickup sticks will be provided. Participants should bring sunscreen, bug spray, a hat. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to volunteers. Saturday, May 17, 2014,10 a.m.– Bucksport Road Cleanup-The Distinguished Men of Bucksport, in partnership with Keep Horry County Beautiful, will host a cleanup of Bucksport Road. Volunteers will meet at the James R. Frazier Community Center on Bucksport Road at 10 am. Trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and pickup sticks will be provided. Saturday, May 24, 2014,11 a.m.- Socastee Park and Yacht Basin-The Chicora Indian Tribe of South Carolina, in partnership with Keep Horry County Beautiful, will host a cleanup of the Socastee Park and Yacht Basin, located under the 544 Bridge off of Peachtree Road. The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except October and December. The next meeting is May 27, 2014, at 2:30 PM in Multi-purpose Room B of the Government and Justice Center located 1301 2nd Avenue in Conway.
