Keep Horry County Beautiful Litter Cleanups

Conway, South Carolina – The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee announces several volunteer opportunities for people or organizations interested in assisting with upcoming litter cleanups in our community.

The Greater Burgess Community Association will hold a community cleanup Saturday, March 15, 2014. The event will begin with registration at 9 a.m. at the South Strand Recreation Center located at 9650 Scipio Lane in Myrtle Beach. Volunteers will be transported to clean up litter along community roads such as Holmestown Road, McDowell Shortcut, and Bay Road. Keep Horry County Beautiful will be assisting with safety vests, gloves, and garbage bags.

The Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors will clean up litter along the George Bishop Parkway on Saturday, March 22, 2014. Volunteers will meet at 10 a.m. at the South Carolina Real Estate Network located at 3721 Wesley Street (off George Bishop Parkway) in Myrtle Beach.

Also, on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 10 a.m., the Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee will assist the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge in a cleanup of an illegal dumpsite at the Cox Ferry Recreation Area located off Jackson Bluff Road in Conway.

The Carolina Forest Civic Association will be holding their Spring Cleanup on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Event registration starts at 9 a.m. at the Carolina Forest Recreation Center located at 2254 Carolina Forest Boulevard, Myrtle Beach.

Most events wrap up around noon. Cleanup supplies are provided however volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and close-toe shoes. Volunteers may also wish to bring sunscreen and/or bug spray.

Horry County Animal Care Center to Hold Pet Vaccination Clinic

Conway, South Carolina – The Horry County Animal Care Center will hold a vaccination clinic, 19 March 2014, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the animal shelter located at 1923 Industrial Park Road in Conway. The Clinic will offer the following services:

Distemper/Parvo $10--must be at least 8-weeks old

Bordatella $10--must be at least 8-weeks old

Rabies $10--must be at least 4-months old
(canine & feline)

Microchip $15--must be at least 8-weeks old
(canine & feline)

Rhinotracheitis/Calici $10--must be at least 8-weeks old

Dogs and cats are both welcome; dogs must be on a hand-held leash and cats must be in a pet carrier.

The Animal Care Center holds these clinics monthly.

To help homeless animals in Horry County find loving homes, the Animal Care Center will offer discounted adoptions the first Friday and Saturday of each month. Potential adopters are encouraged to visit and spend time with the animal they are interested in. Most of the animals are already spayed or neutered and have their shots up to date, however younger animals may need to be returned later to have shots and/or spay/neutering done. The paperwork is easy and only takes a few minutes to fill out. Adoption fees are discounted and typically include spaying/neutering, vaccines, heartworm or leukemia testing, heartworm and flea preventative, intestinal parasite treatment and micro-chipping. Qualifying new pet parents also get 30-days free pet health insurance and coupons from local pet businesses.

Horry County to Host Housing Fair

Conway, South Carolina– The Horry County Community Development Block Grant Office, the county’s Planning and Zoning Department and the Affordable and Workforce Housing Commission will host a Housing Fair at the Horry County Government & Justice Center on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Housing Fair is free and open to the public.

The Horry County Housing Fair will feature multiple workshops on fair housing, personal finance and budget, down payment assistance, heirs property resolution, quiet title, truth in lending and finding the right realtor. The fair will also feature multiple exhibitors to include area non-profits, local governments and lending institutions to provide attendees with a wealth of information on housing programs, financing, and rental and homeownership options. To-date, the following exhibitors will include the South Carolina Housing Authority, the Grand Strand Housing Authority,Myrtle Beach Housing Authority, Habitat for Humanity, the Homeownership Resource Center, South Carolina Legal Services, A Father’s Place, Wells Fargo and the Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors

“The Horry County Housing Fair will be great resource for members of our community to learn about homeownership opportunities for individuals and families across a spectrum of income levels,” stated Diana Seydlorsky, Horry County Community Development Block Grant Director. “The featured workshops and exhibits are designed to educate attendees about location options, being prepared for buying or renting and more.”

Horry County Police Investigate Deadly Shooting

Conway, South Carolina-Detectives with the Horry County Police Department are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred early this morning.

On February 26, 2014 at approximately 3:30am, Officers with the Horry County Police Department’s Central Precinct responded to an address on Weldon Lane in the Conway section of Horry County in reference to a shooting. Upon their arrival, they located one male deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

Detectives with the Horry County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene and an investigation was initiated. It was learned that during a gathering at the residence, an altercation occurred. During the altercation, at least one shot was fired, striking the victim.

Detectives are currently investigating the incident. Updates will be released as they are made available.
