Safety Around Frozen Lakes and Ponds

On January 5, 2018 in Emergencies

CONWAY, SC – As the snow, ice, and cold weather continues in our community, many of the lakes and ponds in our area become frozen over.  The ice on these bodies of water can be an attraction to children and adults, unfortunately, there is no such thing as safe ice in our community.  Where a lake or pond may have a coat of ice, the ice is not strong enough to support body weight.  We ask you to stress to your children, as well as those they play with, to please stay away from this ice to prevent a tragedy from occurring.

If someone does fall through the ice, we remind you of these safety tips:

  1. Call 9-1-1 immediately
  2. Do not run onto the ice, as you could become a victim as well
  3. Attempt to keep the victim calm, stress they keep their head above the water, and lay their arms across the ice if possible.  Having them kick their legs will help keep them in a horizontal and safer position
  4. Always remember the order of Reach, Throw, Row, and Go in your attempt to assist
    1. Find a long object to reach the person; a tree limb, rope, scarf, or ladder can help
    2. If possible, try throwing something to the individual that will float; a plastic sled, cooler, life preserver are examples
    3. If there is a boat, canoe, kayak, or paddle board available, push or row them to the individual in the water
    4. If there are no other options, and as a last resort, you could attempt to form a chain of people to reach the victim
  5. When you do get the individual out of the water, immediately cover them to increase their body heat, and attempt to get them to a warm location while awaiting for Emergency Help to arrive.
