Horry County Posts Signs for RIDE III Projects

On August 31, 2018 in County News

Horry County Government recently posted signs around the county to designate the sites of future RIDE III infrastructure construction projects. The one-cent Capital Project Sales Tax, voted on by Horry County voters by a 69.1 to 30.9 percent margin, will be used to fund these projects. This tax went into effect on May 1, 2017, and Horry County will receive approximately $592 million over the eight-year life of the tax.

Most of the RIDE III projects are in the design phase. While each of these designated areas may not see immediate construction work, motorists may notice early site work as engineers survey the corridors and finalize design plans. Horry County Public Works is already performing on-site work along Carolina Forest Boulevard, clearing areas to make way for utility relocation. Currently, nine projects managed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation are under contract with preliminary engineering work beginning.  Construction contracts have been signed for three dirt road paving projects and two municipalities have commenced resurfacing work.

“These critical projects, supported by the voters in Horry County, are going to deliver major improvements to the infrastructure in our area, providing better access around the county for residents and visitors,” said Horry County Council Chairman Mark Lazarus. “We appreciate our partners including our local municipalities and the South Carolina Department of Transportation for their help in moving these projects forward.”

Horry County Councilman Harold Worley said, “I’m pleased to see these road improvement projects get underway, especially the Highway 31 extension to the state line. I would like to thank the voters of Horry County for helping us make this happen and we hope when folks see these road signs, they know that we are all working together to enhance our community.”
