Upcoming Legacy Business Recognition

The Horry County Historic Preservation Commission’s Legacy Business Recognition Program will recognize three area businesses on July 19, 2022 with ribbon cutting ceremonies. A ceremony will be held at Vereen’s Stores at 9:30 AM, Waterway Furniture Company at 10:15 AM, and A. O. Hardee & Son at 11:00 AM. The ceremonies are free and open to the public.

In 1946 J. B. & Josephine Livingston built a “General Store” and until 1961 the store sold gas for vehicles, gum for kids and general farm supplies. In 1962 Frankie and Linda Vereen bought the store and it became Vereen’s Stores. Through the early 70s the store sold products for both homeowners and farmers. The store later began supplying fertilizer and chemicals to keep up with the times which saw golf courses incorporated throughout the area. Mindy Vereen Jackson and Andee Vereen Dicola joined the family business and now own and operate the family business. The store is located at 8862 Hwy. 90 in Longs.

The Waterway Furniture Company was also opened by J. B. & Josephine Livingston on January 10, 1956. It was sold in 1965 to James and Sarah Jordon. Over the year’s appliances, TV’s, bicycles, swing sets, rugs, and a lot or other things were sold. The building was destroyed by fire on May 31, 1992. However, the warehouse was left and the business operated out of it until a new store was built. Today the store is operated by Darlene Todd, JR Jordan and Josephine Smith, the children of James and Sarah. The company is located 4341 Olde Hwy 17 in Little River.

A. O. Hardee & Son has been in operation since 1955 and are a general and specialty contractor. They are in the process of moving but will remain in Little River.

The Horry County Legacy Business Recognition Program pays tribute to local businesses that have contributed to the economic heritage of Horry County for more than 50-continuous years.
