Quarterly Employee Awards Announced

Conway, South Carolina – Horry County announced the three winners of the Horry County Employee Quarterly Awards, and a winner from each of the three divisions was chosen.

James Richards, Terminal Maintenance Technician for the Department of Airports, won the Administration Division Quarterly Award for his quick action in responding when lighting on the airfield was not operating as expected even though it was not his responsibility to do so.  James was able to diagnose the problem and fix it in less than twenty minutes with no aircraft being delayed.  Shortly after this occurred, Mr. Richards again responded to an emergency maintenance situation with the lighting.  He was able to diagnose and repair the lighting within thirty minutes.  Due to Mr. Richards’ proficiency and knowledge, hundreds of airline passengers experienced no delays, which also saved money for the airport and airlines.  Mr. Richards accepted responsibilities that were no longer his without being asked and this has made him an invaluable asset to the Horry County Department of Airports.

Dan James, Maintenance Technician for J. Reuben Long Detention Center, won the Public Safety Division Quarterly Award for his initiative and willingness to take on new challenges.  Dan oversees the maintenance need of the Randy Gerrald tower of the Jr. Reuben Long Detention Center that opened in 2011.  He was trained by the vendor in the upkeep and repair of the vacuum plumbing waste system and took it upon himself to provide a short informative class for the entire maintenance staff on the system which enabled the staff to perform maintenance as needed.  Mr. James also took on the responsibility to resolve issues in the tower of plumbing stoppages.   He worked with the vendor and was able to resolve the issue while saving the county thousands of dollars in potential repair costs.  Mr. James is an integral part of tower operations and is always willing to assist others.  His professionalism and dedication makes him a valued employee of the Horry County Sheriff’s Office.

Nancy Tindall, Planning Analyst for Horry County Planning & Zoning, won the Infrastructure & Regulation Division Quarterly Award for her teamwork and initiative.   When needed, Nancy stepped up and took on the responsibility for the new Keep Horry County Beautiful (KHCB) program that had been implemented.  She was more than willing to take on all of the duties including working on Saturdays to assist and facilitate community cleanups.  As a representative of Keep Horry County Beautiful, Nancy attended Stormfest, the Ocean Bay Earth Day at the Bay and the Horry Telephone Green Fair.  She has participated in and/or facilitated community cleanup events throughout the county.  The Keep Horry County Beautiful program included 2,986 volunteers in 2014 that spent over 8,777 hours cleaning up roads, streets, rivers and public lands in Horry County.  The volunteers picked up 1,661 bags of trash with over 33,330 pounds of litter and debris.  Ms. Tindall worked with thirty-five members of KHCB to plant trees and plants, add fencing, a grill, and a picnic table and trash receptacle to Rosewood Landing using grant funds.  Ms. Tindall also coordinated the Countywide Cleanup Event sponsored by Horry County Council in which 750 volunteers picked up 21,120 pounds of litter!  Nancy has not only been instrumental in the success of KHCB, but has also continued to perform her normal duties.   She also gives back to the community as part of the Planning Department’s adoption of the Sheppard’s Table.  Ms. Tindall is an asset to Horry County!

These three winners of the Horry County Employee Quarterly Awards received $250, a designated parking space, a certificate of achievement, and are eligible for the Employee of the Year Award of $1,000.

The Employee Quarterly Award Program focuses on an act or performance accomplished by an employee that is significant or of great value to the department or county organization as a whole and is beyond normal expectations of the employee. Considerations are also given to customer service, cost/time savings, recognized increased efficiency, and/or effectiveness, or revenue generated funds.
