Upcoming Legacy Business Recognition: May 3, 2022
The Horry County Historic Preservation Commission’s Legacy Business Recognition Program will recognize four Garden City businesses on May 3, 2022 with ribbon cutting ceremonies. A ceremony will be held at Village Surf Shoppe at 10:00 AM, Dunes Realty at 10:30 AM, Garden City Pavilion Arcade at 11:00 AM and Garden City Furniture at 11:45 AM. The ceremonies are free and open to the public.
The Village Surf Shoppe was opened in 1969 by Eric Eason. Kelly Richards repaired boards and then began building boards for Eric. In 1988 Kelly bought the business. The surfboards are shaped in the shop and have been used to win more East Coast titles than any other surfboard. Village Surf Shoppe is located at 500 Atlantic Avenue.
Dunes Realty located at 128 Atlantic Avenue was established in 1969. The original owners were William G. Nichols, Jr. and James Devers. The current owners are W. Gairy Nichols III and J. Roddy Swain. The business does both real estate sales and vacation rentals.
Garden City Pavilion Arcade located at 103 Atlantic Avenue was founded in 1969 by Georgie and Bill Martin. Bill has since passed and a new partner, Forrest W. Clark came on board in 2021. The arcade offers family entertainment with a mixture of old and new games, and has even added Gigi’s Grill under the roof for a complete experience.
The last business to be honored is Garden City Furniture opened by Hubert Watson and incorporated in 1962. The current owners are Dianne (Hubert’s daughter) and Joey Ray. Although more difficult now, the furniture store still seeks out manufactures from the USA. The business is located at 2444 17 Business South, Garden City.
The Horry County Legacy Business Recognition Program pays tribute to local businesses that have contributed to the economic heritage of Horry County for more than 50-continuous years. For more information, contact Lou Conklin, Senior Planner with Horry County Planning & Zoning at 843-915-5340.
