Conway, South Carolina – The Horry County Animal Care Center wants to help return lost pets to their families. According the ASPCA, stray animals make up 40 to 60% of animals in shelters across the United States. To help pets get home, the Horry County Animal Care Center now posts photos of their stray intakes on the Horry County website. To view animals brought in as strays, scroll down under the Adoptable Pets to the Stray Intakes (the site will update hourly).
The Horry County Animal Care Center holds stray animals for five days per state law. After the five-day period, the animals may go up for adoption, be transferred to other shelters or rescue groups or be euthanized (mainly for health or behavioral issues). To reclaim a pet, a person must provide proof of ownership such as veterinary records, bring state issued identification and provide proof of current rabies injection. The reclaim fees are $50 intake processing fee, $75 if it is a second visit within six months, $10 intake vaccinations, $7 per day for housing/care and there may be a fee if additional veterinary care is needed (pets with identification get a $15 discount!). At the time of reclaim, the owner may purchase a microchip for $15.
Only 7% of lost pets are reclaimed by their owners, usually within 48-hours. Identification by means of a collar and tag (with contact numbers and/or email addresses) or a microchip significantly improves a pet’s chance of reuniting with their family.

Dogs and cats are both welcome; dogs must be on a hand-held leash and cats must be in a pet carrier.
The Animal Care Center holds these clinics monthly.
To help homeless animals in Horry County find loving homes, the Animal Care Center will offer discounted adoptions the first Friday and Saturday of each month. Potential adopters are encouraged to visit and spend time with the animal they are interested in. All of the animals are already spayed or neutered and have their shots up to date, however younger animals may need to be returned later to have shots and/or spay/neutering done. The paperwork is easy and only takes a few minutes to fill out. Adoption fees are discounted and typically include spaying/neutering, vaccines, heartworm or leukemia testing, heartworm and flea preventative, intestinal parasite treatment and microchipping. Qualifying new pet parents also get 30-days free pet health insurance and coupons from local pet businesses.
