Two in Custody in Connection with Aynor Homicide

Conway, South Carolina-Two people are in custody as a result of a fire that left a man dead in Aynor earlier this week.


On April 29, 2014 at approximately 1:30am, Officers with the Horry County Police Department’s West Precinct responded to a home on Hwy. 501 in the Aynor section of Horry County in reference to a deadly fire. Upon their arrival, a man was located deceased inside the home.

Detectives with the Horry County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit were called to the scene and an investigation was initiated. Based on what Detectives observed, it was determined that the incident was intentional and that a homicide took place as well as the fire.

As a result of the investigation, two people have been identified in connection with the incident. They are currently in custody in North Carolina on unrelated charges at this time. Warrants have been issued and they are awaiting extradition to face these charges in Horry County.

This case remains active with additional arrests possible.

Arrested:
Tommy Lee Benton (20 YOA W/M) DOB: 05-16-93. He resides in Chadbury, North Carolina. He is currently in custody in North Carolina awaiting extradition to Horry County.
Charges: Murder, Arson

Mitchell Douglas Cheatham (19 YOA W/M) DOB: 02-07-95. He resides in Council, North Carolina. He is currently in custody in North Carolina awaiting extradition to Horry County.
Charges: Murder, Arson


Homicide Suspect Formally Charged

 

Conway, South Carolina-The suspect arrested by the Horry County Police Department in connection with a deadly shooting over the weekend has been formally charged.   

On November 23rd, 2013 at approximately 8:30, Officers with the Horry County Police Department responded to the intersection of Hwy. 701 and Hwy. 22 in the Conway section of Horry County in reference to a shooting.  Upon their arrival, they learned that the driver of a vehicle had been shot while operating his vehicle.  Detectives with the Horry County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene and an investigation was initiated.   

Detectives learned that prior to the shooting; a drug transaction took place between the victim and the suspect where the money used in the transaction was counterfeit.  As a result the suspect began following the victim until the intersection of Hwy. 701 and Hwy. 22 where multiple shots were fired.  The victim was struck at that time.  A second victim fled the car without injury and ran to safety.   

As a result of the investigation, Detectives were able to identify the suspect involved in the incident.  At approximately 5:45am on November 24th, the suspect was taken into custody by the Horry County Police Department a short distance from his home in Little River.   

In addition, the second victim was taken into custody in connection with his involvement in the counterfeit bills.  

Arrested: 

Christopher Evon Smith (30 YOA B/M) DOB: 03-29-83.  He resides in the Little River section of Horry County.  He is currently in custody at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center. Charge: Murder   

Aaron Lee Campbell (40 YOA W/M) DOB: 09-14-73.  He resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.  He is currently in custody at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center. Charge: Forgery less than $10,000
