Horry’s Heroes: Horry County Veteran’s Affairs New Veteran Recognition Program

Conway, South Carolina – In an effort to recognize the many United States military veterans in Horry County, the Horry County Veteran’s Affairs Office has begun a monthly recognition program entitled “Horry’s Heroes” in which a veteran will be featured on the County’s social media platforms each month.

Horry County Veteran’s Affairs Director, Ronald Elvis, said of the program, “I am extremely proud of the “Horry’s Heroes” program.  Horry County is home to over 30,000 veterans, and in my opinion, each and every one of them is a hero.  This program gives us the opportunity to put the spotlight on one single individual so every citizen in Horry County will be able to know the veteran’s story and how he or she did their part to keep this great nation free!”

All honorably discharged veterans (active duty, reserve, retired and/or deceased) from 1900 to present are eligible to be featured. All that is needed is a picture and basic information (form attached).

The first veteran featured is Larry James Devlin (photo attached) who served with the United States Navy at Groton Longpoint Naval Station in Groton, Connecticut from 1965 to 1969 aboard the submarines the USS Angler and the USS Becuna (Becky B). Mr. Devlin retired to the Myrtle Beach area where he lived with his wife and dogs until his passing in 2014. Larry loved the US Navy and his many shipmates. His daughter said that he spoke fondly of the various ports of call the submarines visited but the one that fascinated him the most was Pompeii, Italy.
